How to Properly Clean Your Windows: Our Tried-and-True Cleaning Process

Windows are vital to your home’s beauty and comfort; they provide a glorious view of your outdoor space, protect the inside of your home from the elements and they let in sunlight to brighten up your house. Because they are so key to a home, they receive a lot of action. It’s important to keep your windows clean so that they can continue to do their job well.

Window glass can get dirty pretty quickly, especially with little hands or pets in the home, but fortunately glass cleaning is pretty simple. Many Pella Windows and Doors windows have easy-clean features that also make it painless to clean the exterior of your windows from the inside of your house, too. Looking for an easy, new window cleaning process? Here’s what Pella Windows and Doors swears on:

  1. You can start by brushing off your window sill with a small broom or brush. The dirt and dust that gathers on the sill and ledges will get stuck there for a long time otherwise, and cleaning it out will also prevent smearing on the glass later on. Make sure not to use the same cleaning duster that you will eventually use to clean the glass!
  2. Run your vacuum’s dusting brush attachment along the side of your window screen that faces indoors. You can also use this vacuum piece to pick up any leftover dirt and dust along your sills.
  3. Use a premixed vinegar-based cleaning solution, or an ammonia-free glass cleaner like Windex® or Sparkle® to clean your window’s glass. You can create your own vinegar-based solution by mixing one-part white vinegar to 10 parts water. Generously apply the cleaner to a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel and wipe down your glass from a variety of different directions for the best clean.
  4. Let your windows air dry after cleaning and then rinse your glass with clean water if there are any streaks left.

We’ve got a few more tips, too! We recommend cleaning your windows on a cloudy day because the sun will dry the cleaning solution too quickly and leave streaks on your glass. Also, our Pella Windows and Doors professionals prefer microfiber cloths since they are the least likely to leave tiny particles behind.

Take care of your attractive view, protection barrier and light source by keeping your windows clean in every season.
